Troop Leaders can be anyone – moms with jobs, stay-at-home dads, aunts, grandparents… any adult ready to launch a new adventure for themselves and their girl!
Becoming a new leader doesn’t have to be intimidating.
We’ve broken it down into easy steps…
1. Sign Up!
- Complete your background check online (we’ll email you a link).
2. Start Your Troop Leader Training
- We’ll send you links and let you know what to do.
3. Meet Your Council Support Team
- Meet with a Volunteer Support Manager from our Girl Scout Council to get a good overview of how the Girl Scout program works.
- Placement Specialists from Council will assist with registrations, background checks, and updating troop information.
4. Meet Your Service Unit
- Our Service Unit is made up of all the Girl Scout troops and volunteers in Simi Valley. To compete your training, you will meet with a volunteer from the Service Unit team.
- All Girl Scout Troops need to set up a Troop Bank Account. The Service Unit Treasurer will work with you to get your troop’s account up and running.
5. Add Girls
- Healthy troops usually have at least 10 girls from multiple schools. If you need help recruiting girls to join your troop, we have a list of girls who are waiting for a troop.
6. Schedule a Family Meeting
- Girl Scouts is a partnership of families, volunteers, and staff working together to provide an amazing experience. Encourage each family to fill a role for the troop to help involve them and to help share the load.
- Work with the parents to decide on a path for the troop. What are the families hoping their girls will get to do, learn, and explore as Girl Scouts?
7. Hold Your First Troop Meeting!
- You are ready to launch your troop on it’s new adventure!
Looking to the future…
- Join the Simi Valley Girl Scout Leader’s BAND page. This is where you can get quick answers and suggestions from experienced leaders. We’ll send you a link!
- Take a CPR and First Aid training class. At least one adult at each troop meeting needs to have taken this training.
- Take the Stepping Out online class and test. This class lets your troop go on field trips and even have indoor sleepovers.
- Take the Outdoor Training class. This 2-part class lets your troop camp outside, learn outdoor cooking skills, and travel! Check the Council calendar for dates. We will also post training dates on the Upcoming Events page.
